Gunfight breaks out in Handwara

Handwara:  An encounter has ensued between militants and government forces in Handwara in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district, official sources said here Tuesday evening.

They said following specific information about the presence of militants at Hajin Kralgund area of Handwara , a joint search operation was launched by 30 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operations Group (SOG) of state police in the area.

However, when forces were moving towards a particular area, militants hiding there fired at them with automatic weapons.

The forces also retaliated, ensuing in an encounter, they said.

 Additional  forces from nearby camps have been rushed to further cordon off the area to foil any attempt by militants to escape.

This is the second encounter since early this morning in north Kashmir. Three Army soldiers and a militant were killed, while six soldiers and a civilian were injured in the encounter at Hajin Bandipora, earlier today.
