Srinagar: Celebrating its 10th year of existence, Jammu and Kashmir Press Association (JKPA) today highlighted the achievements and problems being faced by the media in the state.
Besides all members of the association, large number of people from other fields also participated in the celebration organized under JKPA president Ghulam Hassan Kaloo here today.
Mr Kaloo said that in J&K, the Press faced hardships immediately after 1989 and it reinforced the necessity to form a Body and thus Kashmir Press Association came into being in 2007 and later it was re-designated as JK Press Association after Journalists from Jammu and Chenab Valley joined us in the year 2011.
The Journey of the JKPA has been long and arduous. It is the single largest Body of Journalists and has many achievements to its credit. The JKPA has not only remained in battling for its problems through series of Memoranda submitted to Governor and all the Chief Ministers besides various Central Ministers.
Besides celebrating World Press Freedom Day every year to express solidarity with the Journalists across the globe, where thousands of Journalists have laid down their lives in the line of duty and so far and even 37 Journalists stand martyred during this year till todate.
The JKPA has also been organizing Free Medical Camps in collaboration with Medanta New Delhi, GMC, SKIMS and different Medical Colleges of India. It also knocked the doors of High Court when the Election Commission of India imposed curbs on advertisements and release of payments.
He said the JKPA also raised the issue of DAVP advertisements, rates and other issues with different authorities. Enhancement of budgetary allocation and advertisement rate, treating newspaper establishments as Small Scale Industry to all Incentives, Housing Colony for Journalists, Accommodation for Houseless Scribes, Accreditation for Journalists, Providing opportunities to Journalists to participate in Seminars at National and International level, Consulting JKPA for awarding Journalists on specific occasions and Fair Distribution of Advertisements were also taken up with the government.
The JKPA also had meeting on September 16, 2014 with Home Minister Raj Nath and then Information and Broadcasting ((I&B) Minister Prakash Javadker and submitted Memoranda and urged them to provide immediate requirements for the people after major Flood.
Mr Kaloo said Late chief minister Mufti Muhammad Syed on the demand of the JKPA was kind enough to nominate the President JKPA as a Member to CM’s Award Giving Committee. However, it was not given due recognition after his death.
