The debate on which schools provide better education, private schools or government schools, comes up quite regularly. Every parent wants their child to receive the best education available. Many people prefer sending their children to private schools due to the perception that the overall quality of education provided in these schools is much higher than that provided by the government schools. Recent years have seen a remarkable increase in the number of private schools. Parents today, prefer sending their children to private schools even if it means an hour’s ride to the school daily. Like any other town, Anantnag too has seen an increase in the number of private schools. Every morning hundreds of different school buses can be seen picking up small school going kids in their crisp uniforms, in the main chowk of Anantnag. Why have private schools become so popular? What forces people to send their children to private schools despite the fact that most of these schools are quite expensive? What steps should the government take to attract more students towards the government run schools? Team KO asks. Here is what a few locals have to say.
Private schools provide better facilities. Most of the government schools lack quality infrastructure and facilities that are required for the overall development of the students. Government should upgrade the infrastructure of government schools if they want parents to send their kids to these schools. Also it should be made mandatory for every government teacher to send their kids to the government run schools.

Most government run schools present a sorry picture. Even if a person refuses to judge these schools on the basis of their dilapidated buildings, the results of these schools speak volumes about the quality of education being imparted. Government schools are becoming more and more unpopular day by day. Very soon most of these schools will be lying vacant and the teachers sitting idle because even the poorest of the poor will refuse to send their kids to these schools. If the government wants to prevent that, they need to take some concrete steps immediately.

It is the mentality of the people that needs to be changed. Despite the fact that Government schools have much more qualified teachers than private schools, most parents still prefer to send their children to private schools because they feel government schools don’t impart quality education. I think the negative image of the government run schools needs to be changed.

Parents prefer to send their wards to private schools for a number of reasons. Firstly, the teachers in private schools are much more dedicated and conduct regular class tests. Secondly, no parent wants to send his or her child to a school with low pass percentage. The government needs to come up with a policy which makes it mandatory for the government teachers to enroll their wards in government schools because only then will the standard of education improve in these schools.

Although education is a social responsibility, good education is a guarantee of a bright future. Every parent dreams of a bright future for his or her child. Since our government schools lack basic infrastructure, a parent has no option but to send his or her child to a private school.

Private schools provide better facilities in comparison to the government run schools. Not only do they impart quality education but they also help in the overall development of a child. They help a child develop better social skills. Also as most of the private school teachers are held accountable for the results of their students, they are more dedicated and hardworking.

There are a lot of reasons behind parents preferring to send their children to private schools. Most government schools lack basic infrastructure. The government is even running some schools in rented buildings. How is a parent expected to send his or her child to a school which lacks a proper building? Also most government teachers hardly care about teaching the students. It is not like they won’t get their monthly pay if their students fail in exams.

In spite of having much more qualified teachers, the government run schools fail to show better results. On the other hand, not only do the private schools show better results but they also employ creative methods of teaching.

I think both private as well as government schools have a few advantages and a few disadvantages. Government schools have better faculty but lack quality infrastructure. On the other hand, private schools provide better quality of education but at a very high cost.

Private schools have a much better student to teacher ratio. Also they cater to the overall development of the children rather than concentrating only on providing education.
— Aafaq Manzoor , Civil Engineer
Private schools are definitely better than government schools as they provide better infrastructure, better teacher to student ratio and better environment for studying. The only reason why the government schools still have a few students is because the government comes up with new and innovative schemes, like free education, mid-day meals etc. to attract the poorer sections of the society.
— Muzamil Ahmad,
Private schools don’t only care about imparting education. They concentrate on developing the overall personality of a child. They groom students and turn them into responsible citizens who will tomorrow be able to lead the society on the path of development.

Quality education is extremely important in today’s world. Being a private school teacher, I know the amount of hard work and effort we put in each day so that our students can be equipped with knowledge. Also we don’t just focus on teaching them, we focus on educating them and by educating them I mean helping them become better human beings and conscious citizens of our society.
— Ishfaq Amad Lone, Teacher
If the government run schools will provide quality education, no parents will prefer sending their kids to private schools. The teachers employed by the government in the government run schools should work with dedication and sincerity so that the number of students studying in these schools increases.
