PSA A ‘Big Source’ Of Lawlessness

SRINAGAR: In a statement, Jamaat said in a recent case police after arresting a “peace-loving citizen” Sharif-ud-Din Dar son of Abdul Salam Dar of Arampora, Sopore on October 6, kept him under constant custody for about two-and-a-half months in the local police station and then got him detained under Public Safety Act at Kot-Balwal Jammu.

“The District Magistrate Baramulla again accepting the dictation of police passed the order of detention thereby depriving one more innocent person of his precious right of personal liberty,’ said Jama’at-e-Islami.

It added the Public Safety Act was originally passed with a purpose to curb the criminal and disruptive activities of the hard core criminals but afterwards it was abused and applied against the political and ideological opponents and so far thousands of innocent persons have been detained under it in the jails within and outside the state.

“As such this act has become a great source of public havoc and human rights violations and the state administration and police violently misused it. On termination of a maximum period of detention, this act is used to re-detain a person, which is quite against the very purpose of law.

The judiciary too has failed to stop this misuse of law and as this law is a big source of the lawlessness,” the party said.
