Srinagar: Chill is back after sunny Sunday in the Kashmir valley, where famed health resort of Pahalgam and ski resort of Gulmarg witnessed considerable drop in the minimum temperature after fresh snowfall yesterday.
Leh and border town of Kargil in Ladakh region continued to shiver as the minimum temperatures was minus 11.4 degree and minus 9.1 degree respectively.
A Met department spokesman said here this afternoon that light rain or snow may occur at isolated places over higher reaches of Kashmir valley during the next 24 hours. However, dry but partly cloudy sky at Jammu and mainly clear sky at Leh is predicted during the next 24 hours.
After dry but chilly night, sun appeared again in the morning only to play hide and seek as the day progressed in the valley, where people are celebrating Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, birthday of Prophet Muhammad.
Following fresh snowfall, the minimum temperature witnessed considerable drop at famed health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir. Against yesterdays 2.6 degree recorded yesterday, it was minus 4.2 degree at Pahalgam, where earlier lowest was minus 3.8 degree on December 12.
At world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where slopes are yet to receive heavy snowfall, the minimum temperature also witnessed major drop. After recording 2 degree minimum temperature yesterday, when there was light snowfall on ski slopes, there was considerable drop in the mercury and settled at minus 3.4 degree, still a notch above normal.
Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir also recorded a drop in the minimum temperature. Against yesterdays 3.6 degree, the minimum temperature there was minus 1.2 degree.
In the summer capital, Srinagar, the minimum temperature did not witness any major change. After recording a notch above normal temperature, people woke up to a sunny morning though the intensity of the heat was very low as compared to yesterday when there was summer like situation. However, as the day progressed sun started playing hide and seek. Despite chilly weather people continued to throng shrines and other religious place to join prayers on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad.
Met spokesman said against yesterdays 0.5 degree, the minimum temperature today in the city was 0.1 degree, a notch above normal. He said the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 15 degree and minus 1 degree during the next 24 hours.
After recording major relief yesterday, Leh freezes again as the minimum temperature recorded considerable drop of more than 12 degree. Against yesterdays 1.3 degree, the minimum temperature at Leh was minus 11.4 degree.
The sky would be mainly clear and the maximum and minimum temperatures could be around 12 degree and minus 7 degree respectively during the next 24 hours at Leh.
At border town of Kargil on Srinagar-Leh national highway, which was put through after remaining closed yesterday due to snowfall and slippery road conditions, the minimum temperate was minus 9.1 degree.
At Jammu, the winter capital of the state, the sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 27 degree and 11 degree respectively during the next 24 hours.w
