KUPWARA: A fierce encounter ensued between militants holed up in a house and security forces in the frontier district of Kupwara but the militants managed to flee, official sources said here.
They said on a tip off about the presence of militants, security forces and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint search operation in a populated area at Langate, Handwara, in the frontier district of Kupwara in the wee hours today.
The entire village was cordoned off and all exit points were sealed to foil any attempt by militants to escape.
With the first light this morning security forces launched a search operation in the particular area in the village, they said adding militants hiding there opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons and also hurled hand grenades.
Security forces immediately took positions and retaliated fire ensuing a fierce encounter.
Sources said intermittent firing was going on when the reports last came in.
"As a cordon was being laid, the militants fired upon the forces, which was retaliated, but the militants managed to escape," the officer said.
He said the search operation to trace the ultras was on.
