Pulwama: A militant was killed in an encounter with government forces in Kakapora area of Pulwama in south Kashmir on Saturday, police said.
A top police official said that an encounter broke out between militants and forces in Begumbagh area of Kakapora, in which one militant was killed.
According to reports 55 Rashtriya Rifles men and Special Operation Group personnel had laid an ambush in the area after receiving inputs about the militant movement. “The militant when challenged fired upon the forces and during the retaliatory action he was killed.”
The killing of the militant sparked violent protests and clashes in the area, while protesters also pelted stones on police station Kakapora. Government forces resorted to tear-smoke shelling to disperse them.
The identity of the slain militant was not immediately established, however sources identified him as Rayees Dar alias Munaib an M.Tech Student from Dangar Mohalla Kakapora. Thousands of people have arrived in the native village of the slain militant when this report was being filed.
