SRINAGAR: Independent member of Kashmir's Legislative Assembly Er. Sheikh Rashid was detained by police Friday when he tried to enter the beseiged Grand Mosque of Srinagar where authorities have banned weekly congregational prayers since July 9 this year after the eruption of ongoing anti-India uprising.
Residents of the area also came out to join the firebrand MLA after he entered into a heated arguement with the police personnel who stopped him at the gates of the locked historic mosque, the epicentre of Kashmir's separatist politics.
Eyewitnesses told thje Kashmir Observer, that the police and paramilitary forces headed by S.P North prevented Rashid from entering the mosque and this resulted in scuffle between MLA and his companions and Government forces. Rashid, who heads Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), was reportedly injuried after he was dragged out from his vehicle and taken to a nearby police station.
The police action enraged his supporters who raised high pitch slogans against police and the state government.
An AIP spiokesman said MLA's clothes were torn and he was detained with some two dozens party workers in Nawhatta police station.
Talking to reporters before his arrest, Er. Rashid accused Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti of enforcing RSS agenda in Kashmir and preventing Friday Prayers at Jamia Mosque, according to him, is part of that.
"Ms Mufti is following dictates from RSS headquarters. She wants to implement their Hindutva agenda. What can be more shameful than locking the main mosque of Kashmir which continuous to be under siege for 19th consecutive Friday", he said.
"The myth of so called secularism and religious freedom stands exposed and it needs no authentication that the radical fanatic right wing Hindu forces have taken over control of India and are doing everything to make India a Hindu Rashtra", MLA said.
"These communal forces need to realize that J&K was never part of India and whatsoever the radical forces want to do in rest of India, cannot be allowed to be implemented in J&K”, MLA from Langet in Kupwara further said.
He accused J&K Police of working like private army for the current 'Nagpur run' collation government in Kashmir and condemned it for facilitating 'fascists like' Mohan Bhagwat to throw venom against Muslims but prevents Muslims from offering prayers in the largest and historic Jamia Masjid of Srinagar.
