Srinagar: Officially declared unsafe for the vehicular movement, the Mehjoor Nagar Bridge, near Rajbagh continues to remain open for the vehicular movement, despite a precautionary notice by the Roads and Buildings (R&B) department that it is “unsafe and can collapse anytime”.
However, the bridge continues to remain open despite leaving questions unanswered if it is unsafe, why the authorities aren’t closing it before any major tragedy occurs.
The R&B has made it clear that they have not re-opened the bridge and blaming people for the same.
There is also a signboard standing tall at the bridge that reads: “Bridge is unsafe for traffic."
This poses a question to the traffic police to explain how they can allow traffic over a bridge which the administration has closed and declared unsafe.
Instead of stopping vehicles, around three to four traffic cops are daily deployed at the bridge to ensure smooth movement of the vehicles, despite knowing that it has been declared unsafe and closed down by the R&B.
During the peak hours of traffic movement the bridge shakes and makes it one feel like it can collapse anytime.
The R&B department had dug portion of the bridge in the dead of the intervening night of April 28 and 29, and in the next morning people protested against it saying the authorities had closed the bridge without providing any alternative route to them.
Ex-Chief engineer R&B Satish Razdan had said they had officially closed the bridge, but locals of the area took the law into their own hands and re-opened the bridge. (PTK)
