SRINAGAR: Police have arrested a man and his father in connection with a dowry-related incident wherein a young woman was allegedly beaten and later set afire by her in laws. Her mother-in-law and sister-in-law are still at large.
According to the reports, Rubina Akhatar (26) married to one Adil Gani Lone of Namblabal Pampore in September last year, was allegedly set afire by her in-laws. She has suffered 60% burns in the alleged assault.
Many residents of Dangarpora Kanipora Budgam appeared at Press Enclave Srinagar on Saturday and demanded harshest of punishments to the guilty.
“Her in-laws including her husband first tortured her and later set her on fire, the protestors said. “The victim is battling for life in SMHS Hospital Srinagar.”
Giving details of the horrific incident, the family members of the victim said that she was married to Adil Gani Lone of Namblabal Pampore in September last year.
“She was subjected to domestic violence by her in-laws who were demanding dowry,” brother of the victim, Muhammad Yasin Sofi, a resident of Dangerpora village in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, said.
“My sister called me on Thursday night informing us how she was beaten by her in-laws,” Sofi said. “I couldn’t go there because of the ongoing turmoil and instead called my other sister married in the same in Pampore to enquire about the incident.”
“When she reached there the next morning, she was allowed inside the house and was beaten too,” Sofi said. “I decided to drive straight to my sister’s house.”
Sofi, only brother among five sisters, was reportedly received with wails and cries outside his sister’s house.
“They didn’t allow me inside too but I couldn’t tolerate the cries of my sister and jumped over the fence. I saw her mother-in-law and sister-in-law holding my sister and her husband setting her on fire. She came rushing towards me when she saw me,” he said.
The woman was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital where from she was shifted to SMHS hospital in Srinagar. “She is undergoing treatment, but her condition is critical,” he said.
The victim was later taken to district hospital Pampore from where she was referred to SMHS hospital in Srinagar, where she is presently undergoing treatment.
According to MS SMHS hospital, Dr Nazir Chowdhary, the victim has received 35 to 40 percent burn injuries.
Police have registered a case in the incident. Giving details, SHO Pampore Manzoor Ahmad Beigh said that they have arrested the husband and father-in-law of the victim. "We have registered a case vide FIR number 89/2016 under sections 498A, 354, 306/511 of RPC," said Beigh, adding that they carried out searches to arrest the mother-in-law and sister-in-law of the woman but they have been evading arrests,” he said.
It was learnt Sofi’s sister was facing torture earlier as well. “Six months back, her husband had beaten her up while she was pregnant. She lost her child as a result of the beating. It was only after the intervention of elders of locality that she was sent back to her in-laws,” says Sofi.
