Muharram procession teargassed in old city

SRINAGAR:Police and CRPF men lobbed tear gas shells on a Muharram procession which started from Khanqah-i-Maula to Habba Kadal on Tuesday.

Reports said scores of members of Shia community took out a procession on 9th Muharram from Khanqah-i-Maula Srinagar to Habba Kadal, however, forces lobbed tear gas shells to disperse them off.Despite the shelling, the procession managed to reach its destination – Habba Kadal.

State government has imposed restrictions in Srinagar parts on the occasion of 9th Muharram on Tuesday.

Meanwhile Ittehadul Muslimeen president Moulana Masroor Abbas Ansari condemned the ban on Muharram Processions across the valley and use of  force and teargas shelling on mourners at Khankah Mualla on Tuesday.

He  appealed the mourners to attend all the Muharram Processions according to the schedule which includes todays procession from Mandibal to NabdiPora, Zadibal.
