SRINAGAR: The city of Srinagar is reeling under a spate of robberies with armed robbers striking in a big way relieving many of cash and valuables. Residents in many downtown areas are having sleepless nights with armed robbers virtually ruling the roost.
Reports pouring in from areas like Kani Maziar, Jamalatta, Chirmgari Mohalla, Shah kadal, Sonarkol, Qarfali Mohalla said that unidentified gunmen had looted several homes during the previous night and police is yet to wake up to the situation.
According to reports these robbers barged in to the house of Zahoor Ahmad of Jamalatta and made off with Rs 50,000 in cash.In nearby Ganzkhod locality one Abdul Rashid Sofi lost 13,000 to them.The thieves, snatched Rs 6000 and 5000 respectively from Haji Mohammad Sidiq and Bashir Ahmad Bhat of Kani Mazar and Qarfali Mohalla the same night.
In a brazen daylight holdup a businessman was relieved of Rs 15000 and other valuables in crowded Maharaja Bazar today.
According to reports,Naresh Mehra a cloth merchant on way to Lalchowk from Gogji Bagh in an auto rickshaw was held up in a traffic jam in Maharaja Bazar.Another auto rickshaw pulled up besides him and the occupant held a pistol to the polio ridden Naresh Mehra's head.The badly frightened businessman tried to resist but the robber grabbed his bag and sped the auto out of the scene before his victim could cry for help.
