SRINIGAR: A protester died from pellet gun injuries during fresh clashes with government forces, a hospital official said, a day after the government said it would replace the weapons.
The 21-year-old youth identified as Naseer Ahmad was killed during clashes in Anantnag district southeast of the main city of Srinagar, in which police said scores were injured.
"Naseer had a zero degree pellet injury near his heart. That means he was shot from very close range," a senior hospital staffer at Seer Hamdan hospital in Anantnag said.
Another lady was critically injured after being hit by pellets. Reports reaching here said that forced barged in to residential houses in Seer Hamdan village around 3 AM.
People came out of their beds as forces thrashed men, women and elderly. Clashes ensued and have not stopped since then. More than 70 civilians have sustained injuries.
Doctors at the hospital said that another lady was critically injured as pellets hit her head. She was shifted to Anantnag district hospital.
PHC Seer is managing a huge rush of injured civilians while as SDH Seer treated over 50 such injured two of whom were shifted to Islamabad hospital.
However, a doctor at Islamabad hospital said that that the lady, identified as, Jameela, wife of Ghulam Mohi ud din Sheikh, was rushed to Srinagar for further treatment.
“She has suffered heavy damages to her head due to pellets,” the doctor said.
As this report was being filed, clashes were going on in Seer.
Reports further said that at least two youths have been arrested by police in the raid.
Overnight death of a 17-year-old boy, who was critically injured in forces’ action in Sonawani area of Wadoora in north Kashmir’s Sopore on Sunday, succumbed to his injuries at Srinagar’s SMHS hospital on Monday evening, taking the death toll in the ongoing Kashmir uprising to 79.
The slain youth was identified as Musaib Majeed Nagoo, who, according to reports, had sustained serious head injury reportedly due to teargas shell and was referred to the SMHS hospital yesterday in a critical condition.
“He succumbed at around 10.30 PM in the Intensive Care Unit,” a doctor at the hospital said.
As per the witnesses, after Musaib was hit on his head, forces dragged him and beat him up.
“It wasn’t clear whether a tear-gas shell or pellets hit him. It seemed as if teargas shell had hit his head. It was after hectic efforts of local youth that he was saved from the clutches of forces and right away shifted to SMHS hospital in Srinagar,” they had said.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Monday police and troops would use chilli-based shells instead of ones filled with birdshot to quell the unrest after hundreds of civilians sustained serious eye injuries in the clashes.
The government has been coming under growing pressure over the level of casualties in Kashmir during the protests, which broke out after the death of a popular militant leader on July 8 in a gun battle with soldiers.
The metal pellets or birdshot fired from the pump-action shotguns rarely result in deaths, but can often blind victims if the fragments hit them in the eye.
The authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions in six police station areas of Srinagar city including Nowhatta, Khanyar, Safa Kadal, M.R. Gunj, Rainawari and Maisuma on Tuesday.
Although police said there was no curfew anywhere in the Valley on Tuesday, no pedestrian or traffic was allowed by the forces in areas where restrictions were imposed.
The failure of the all-party delegation headed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh in cutting any ice with the separatists who are spearheading the nearly two-month long protest shutdown, has come as a big setback to peace efforts here.
All educational institutions, main markets, public transport and other businesses remained closed for the 60th consecutive day on Tuesday.
CRPF, Police Harass Rangreth Residents
All roads leading to Rangreth area have been blocked by forces on Tuesday. CRPF and local police have been deployed in all lanes and by-lanes.
According to the residents, CRPF personnel were deployed in Rangreth early in the morning with strict instructions not to come out of their houses lest they would be fired at.
“We are stuck inside our homes; it is undeclared curfew here,” the local said.
The CRPF and police men have closed down all shops and no vehicle is being allowed to move towards the industrial area in Rangreth.
The locals also informed that late Monday evening announcements were made from local Masjid loudspeakers asking all males to come out on roads and females to stay indoors. “Then forces come and fired teargas shells evoking protests.”
Another eyewitness said, “CRPF men come every day and ransack the residential houses. They claim some of their arms are missing and they blame locals for it. It just gives them reason to enter our houses and then they break down everything that comes in their way.”
