Srinagar: – Participating in the debate on grants of Agriculture sector in State Legislative Assembly, former Minister and MLA Amirakadal, Syed Mohammad Altaf Bukhari Wednesday said the government must focus on the agriculture as this sector has the potential to make the state economically self-sufficient.
Unfortunately the agriculture sector is craving for the attention it deserves from the government, he observed.
Laying stress on a comprehensive policy to salvage the dividends of this sector, Bukhari said that the development of agriculture sector can improve the economic condition of the people and most of the unemployed educated youth in the state could be absorbed in agriculture and its allied sectors which to great extent address the unemployment problem in the state.
He said that a huge population in J&K are dependent on Agriculture and its allied sectors and if this area is accorded the requisite attention, the state can become economically self-sufficient and its economy can touch the sky.
I dont know why government has not given the much required attention to this sector, he said and added: Off course the industries and tourism are important sectors that need a sustained focus but I think the agriculture sector deserves the same treatment. We cannot ignore agriculture sector which can prove as the backbone of the States economy.
He also advocated for the timely promotion of officers in the agriculture department. People working in this department face stagnation, he said and remarked that if officers are not granted promotion in time, which is otherwise due to them, how can government expect results from these officers?
Lauding the J&Ks IAS cadre, Bukhari, however, criticised government for not giving technical departments to technical man power. Agriculture department is a technical department but it is being manned by non-technical persons, he said, late Mufti Saheb had asserted that these things will be kept in mind but I dont know why it is not being followed.
He further claimed that Ladakh region can supply vegetables to half of India provided suitable vegetation is done in the cold desert. He rued as why Ladakh lawmakers did not raise such issues in the house.
Bukhari hoped that the expertise of newly appointed Vice Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology-Kashmir will be used in Horticulture department. He has had a good stint at CITH, Bukhari said, I hope he uses his expertise in the agri-sector as a whole.
