A place where your mental, physical, behavioral development occurs in a fashionable way. I dont mean that you forget your own ethics in the varsity but you get to new things, experience them, and learn from the changes and challenges occurring around you, resulting in the growth of a citizen towards perfection.
In a varsity you dont remain confined to the particular department in which you are enrolled but you become part of each and everything that belongs to the university. From campus library or an admission office to the campus cafeteria or a garden outside, you are part of everything there and you have been given the right to speak up no matter if your words are in favour of the authorities or against them. These are the rights every university owes to its students. But here in the south campus of Kashmir University these words are just words. Here if one tries to pen down the flaws in the system, he is warned and suspended from the university which forces him to apologize before the authorities. Instead of amending the flaws in the system one is made to admit that he has committed a mistake.
The campus has got a letter box in the science block where students can put their complaints and those will be kept confidential as written on the letter box. But I can verily guess that the complaints which the letter box received years before are still confidential as the authorities never opened the box to get the complaints and address them. They dont get time to get out of the comfortable chairs of their offices.
The campus even lacks the basic healthcare facilities. The water storage tanks have become a hub of diseases as they have never been cleaned since the day of their operation. The hostel guys even protested on it as many boys reported ill- health after consuming the contaminated water. The authorities then tried to hush them off as soon as possible as it happened the day of visit of honorable chief minister of the state. To cure ill- health if one refers to the dispensary of the campus there you will always find the buzz of non-teaching staff having their chit- chat with the person in- charge or you will find it locked as the man is busy in playing cricket in the campus.
At a place where you get the poorest basic facilities how come is possible that one will grow up there as a responsible citizen. Our parents, teachers see in us as there future. They want us to be the idol of idols but they dont know that in the inner of our heart we are struggling trying hard to amend the wrong things but at the same time knowing that nobody cares. They dont care about you but they should care about themselves now. They should of the content that they have to be answerable for all the services towards the society. Let us all wake up and try to change the things around us. Let the authorities introspect themselves and try to address the grievances of the students as well as of the faculty else time isnt too far when whole of the campus will turn into nomans land and will either be occupied by the army of High Ground or turned into a grazing field for the cattle.
To quote Rabindranath Tagore:
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where world has not been broken up in fragments by narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches into arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into the ever widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my father let my country awake.
