Srinagar: Scores of Kashmir University students Tuesday alleged that they were barred from organizing a seminar in remembrance of what they said rape and murder victims Asiya and Neelofar of South Kashmirs Shopian district.
We had decided to organize a seminar titled: Sexual Violence: Indias Weapon of War in Kashmir, outside the lawns of Iqbal Library on Tuesday, but University administration did not allow us, a group of students told a local news agency adding that they had been promoting the seminar on social networking sites from past couple of days and were expecting huge gathering.
The University administration acted like fascists and in a bid to keep students away from the seminar Vice Chancellor of the Varsity circulated a notice to the departments stating that all the students must remain present in their departments and the VC may inspect them anytime, they said and added that some students who had assembled outside the Iqbal Library lawns were forcibly asked to leave the place on the pretext that Chief Minister is scheduled to visit the Varsity.
The students alleged that University administration is resorting to undemocratic means to choke the sentiments and voice of the students community. University administration is trying to be more loyal than the king and in a bid to appease the pro-India establishment here, it is adopting all means to crush the dissent in the Varsity, they said.
Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi said that everything has to be done in a proper way. First of all these students are not identifying themselves and secondly, they didnt seek permission from the administration. We would have certainly allowed them if they had come up with a written application, he said.
