Srinagar: Director General Department of Youth Services & Sports Jahangir Mir Wednesday asked his department to carry out selections on merit basis, a statement from the department said. He was chairing a meeting of all the District Youth Services & Sports Officers of the Kashmir Division to review the various tourneys that the department is conducting these days.
He stressed upon giving flip to the sports activities in the state. He highlighted the achievements of J&K players in various inter-state competitions.
Mir expressed his happiness over the medal tally of 2015 which, According to the statement, has brought J&K on Indias sports map. J&K, as per the handout, has won all of 38 medals in year 2015 punctuated with five gold, ten silver and 23 bronze.
The DG claimed that as many as 330 school playfields are being developed by the department during 2016-17 which, according to him, will help in tapping and shaping the sports talent of school children of this state.
A separate calendar will be issued which will earmark the various sports activities to be carried out under under newly launched centrally sponsored scheme Khelo India in all the three regions of J&K.
While stating the importance and uniqueness of this scheme DG YSS said that the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, GOI has rechristened Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan as Khelo India.
Youth Services & Sports, according to the handout,will organize a League Knock-out Tournament for student and non-student players of Kashmir Division in the near future. While highlighting the need of such kind of sports activity DG Sports stated that the time has come when every such person should get chance of proving his mettle without the restrictions of being or not being on the rolls of any Educational Institution.
Besides others Joint Director Kashmir YS&S Bashir Ahmed, Deputy Director Central YS&S Haji Mirza Hussain, AO, In-charge Press and Publicity and other senior officials of the department were present in the meeting.
