Srinagar: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) today expressed dismay as doctors indulging in private practice are being considered for the post of Director SKIMS. President DAK Dr Nisar ul Hassan said it is ironical that SKIMS doctors involved in illegal practice are considered for the highest post of a prestigious institution. Private practice by SKIMS doctors was declared as criminal offence by virtue of a criminal law (amendment) act of 2002.
Despite ban these medicos are openly running their private clinics. Some of these doctors were caught red-handed doing private practice but instead of punishment they were promoted and are now being considered for the highest post of SKIMS These doctors give perfunctory treatment to patients in SKIMS so that they visit their private clinics.
They misuse the facilities of premier institution for their private patients at the cost of those who have no resources to attend their clinics. Long delays in procedures and surgeries force patients to go outside state for treatment. The menace of private practice has ruined SKIMS which was created with an aim to provide patient care of high standard and produce high quality medical professionals. With the help of some elements, these private practitioners generated a false perception about private practice of SKIMS and misled people. For disseminating wrong information and in order to cover up their wrongdoings huge amount of money was siphoned off from SKIMS to these vested interests.
There is no choice of private practice in SKIMS as it is a non- practicing institution from the very inception. These elements are lobbying in the power corridors to push the case of these practitioners.
The incumbent Director, selected by previous regimen was involved in private practice before he took the charge of institution. As a result of which private practice continued and private practioners were shielded and in fact elevated to top positions of SKIMS. And when some employees dared to speak against these malpractices, they were arrested and some of them were suspended.
We urge Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to select a person with integrity and clean record for the post of Director SKIMS and save the hope and future of health care of JK. (PTK)
