‘Hit and run case’:Slain man’s family seeks arrest of AEE R&B

Srinagar: Family of a Bemina man who died after being hit by Tata Safari of an AEE of Roads and Buildings Department has sought the arrest of the top official who was allegedly drunk while driving on 21st of this month.

The family of Abdul Aziz, resident of Abu Bakr Colony Bemina said the deceased was returning home carrying a loaf of bread in his hands which he had gone to fetch from the market on May 21.

“When he was crossing the road, an over-speeding Tata Safari driven by Tatheer Manzoor AEE R&B Kashmir hit him. Aziz fell down and was bleeding profusely.  The vehicle was running so fast that the application of sudden brakes left the tyre marks on about ten metres and every passerby was shocked to hear the screeching halt.

“People gathered and lifted the bleeding man and on their insistence the driver ferried the injured to the hospital.  Sensing the serious condition of the patient, he left his car at the hospital and fled,” said the family.

They said that Abdul Aziz couldn’t bear the pain of his wounds and passed away at SKIMS Soura. “We approached the police but till now the influential man has been evading arrest simply in connivance with the law enforcing agencies.  The blanket bail obtained by him on May 23 expired on 28 May but still police do not arrest him,” they alleged.

The family said Aziz was an ordinary citizen and ‘that’s why police are not taking action’. “Had he been from some influential or political family the whole government machinery including the police would have been ensuring justice for him. But here it is a common man whose life has no price under the clutch of a driver who probably was drunk. This whole episode not only highlights the callous attitude of the police but also begets a question regarding the safety of a common man,” they said.

The family has appealed Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and DGP K Rajendra to intervene personally in the matter and get the accused arrest. (GNS)
