Srinagar: Inhabitants living around BB Cant Batwara Friday staged protest against Army for ‘illegally occupying’ the Das Memorial Park situated in the area and were demanding to remove occupation from the park.

The residents assembled outside the gate of Army headquarter and blocked the main road of the area. They were chanting slogans like ‘we want justice’.

After blocking the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in the area, traffic movement was disrupted for long time in the area.

According to the residents, ‘Army is illegally occupying the park situated in the area. It is not the first time when they are illegally occupying the buildings or parks in the area.’

They said that Army is continuously occupying the buildings and parks in the area. ‘Army has already occupied Government High School Batwara and its 100 Kanals of land as well,’ they said.

They said that after school buildings they are now occupying Public Park by constructing walls on the four sides of the park. ‘We are demanding action against Army for illegally occupying the lands in the area,’ they said.

After assurances from the police, the protesters dispersed peacefully.

Station House Officer, SHO of the concerned Police station, Sabzar Ahmad told KNS that they talked to Military Engineering Service (MES) in this regard who said that they didn’t permit anyone to construct any wall in the locality.

‘The issue has been almost resolved as MES has also directed Army to stop construction work in the area,’ Ahmad said. (KNS)
