Anantnag Feb3:- The residents of Srigufwara and other adjacent villages are up in arms against Power Development Department (PDD) for failing to provide uninterrupted power supply for past several weeks.
Agitated residents blocked Bijbehara-Langanbal road for hours together Monday and raised high pitched slogans against the PDD and government.
Sriguwafara-the native village of MLC Sofi Yousf is reeling under darkness from past one month. Other areas like Khiram, Sirhama, Mehand, Shaligam, Hitigam which are getting electricity supply from Receiving Station Khiram are also witnessing unscheduled and frequent power cuts. We get one hour of power supply in a day. The frequent and prolonged power cuts have left the entire villages virtually reel under darkness, Altaf Ahmad, a protester told Kashmir Observer.
When contacted PDD officers told Kashmir Observer that receiving station is overloaded which causes frequent cuts. “Problem can be resolved only if the residents use electricity judiciously judiciously,” a senior official said.
Despite repeated requests from Police, protesters refused to call off the protest resulting in inconvenience to devotees visiting Khiram-Hazratbal shrine.
Meanwhile, SDM Pahalgam and other senior officers visited Srigufwara and pacified the protesters with assurance that he will take up the issue with concerned department.
SDM, who hails from the area termed the demands of residents genuine and said that in coming days he himself will convene a ‘public Darbar’ to discuss the problem with the department. On his assurance, protesters later called off the strike and allowed traffic to play normally.
