SRINAGAR: Mufti Muhammad Sayeed who shortly after assuming the office of Chief Minister in 2002 disbanded infamous counter insurgent force Special Operation Group forced police chief to throw elite Gupkar Road open for general public.
Recounting the day when Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed was supposed to address media at Chief Ministers house located at Maulana Azad Road, a scribe working for a national news paper told CNS that Mufti ordered the then police chief to throw open Gupkar Road. The Gupkar road had been closed for the traffic and for general public soon after the eruption of militancy. Some people from Sonwar area of Srinagar city had approached CM Mufti to throw the road open for the public. We all were standing waiting for the arrival of Mufti. As he arrived, he ordered the then police chief Gopal Sharma to throw Gupkar road open for the general public. The reluctant Sharma pleaded before Mufti that road cant be thrown open and he must reconsider his decision.
Mufti didnt listen to him and told him his cavalcade will pass through Gupkar and he wants to seen it open. As journalists followed Mufti towards the lawn, DGP Gopal Sharma tried to convince Mufti that VVIPs reside in the area and it will be great rist, but Mufti ordered him take his seat and keep his mouth shut, he said.
We all were curious and rushed to Sonwar to see if Gupkar has really been thrown open for the general public. We were astonished to see it open and the courtesy was Mufti Sahab, he said adding that Mufti didnt use to listen to anything and he had a great decision power, he said. (CNS)
