Srinagar: With courts finding it difficult to cope up with ever increasing number of cases within the present infrastructure and manpower, Lok Adalats and alternate dispute resolution mechanisms has given a respite to justice seeking people.
According to a report released by the J&K high court, 362108 cases have been settled by Lok Adalats in the state since 1998 to October last year. During the time 5569 Lok Adalats were held and a whopping Rs 235766977 amount has been settled as compensation, the report adds.
The Lok Adalats and alternate dispute resolution mechanisms has given a respite to people and helped in dealing with back logs in State, reads the report.
It said that the State Legal Services Authority concentrated in pre-litigation matters as well as pending cases.
The Lok Adalats mainly deal with cases related to matrimonial disputes, motor accidents claim, Bank recovery matters, compoundable criminal cases.
The report also revealed that there are 312759 cases pending in high court and subordinate courts in the state.
In high court also, there are 106982 cases pending by the end of September 30 last year and of them 99353 are civil while 7629 are criminal cases.
Of the pending cases, 5944 (civil) and 171 (criminal) are pending for more than ten years while 25662 (civil) and 751 (criminal) are 5 to 10 years old.
In sub ordinate courts, the report states that there 205777 cases 84090 (civil) and 121687 (criminal)pending by the end of the September. They include 1246 (civil) and 894 (criminal) cases that are pending for more than a decade while 4532 (civil) and 6737 (criminal) are pending for 5 to 10 years.
The report also reveals that there are 4014 (civil) and 1491 (criminal) cases which has been stayed by the Supreme Court of India while the 1844 (civil) and 1159 (criminal) cases have been stayed in subordinate courts.
The report said that 8019 (civil) and 532 (criminal) cases have been disposed of by the high court from 1 January to 3 September last year while the number of cases decided by subordinate courts during same time include 43865 civil and 207176 criminal cases.
