Srinagar: To crack a whip on power thefts in the Valley, the power department has constituted special surveillance teato unearth power theft.

Sources in the Power development department told KNS that on the directions of the top officials of the power department, the special squads have been constituted to unearth power-thefts.

“These special squads will work in close coordination with the field officers of the PDD and the concerned police stations. Each squad comprises of around 5-6 people depending on the area and heavily relies on analytics and physical verification to detect power-theft,” one of the officials of the PDP said.

He said that the team has already raided high-end consumers in the city in the past few days. “Many consumers were heavily penalized during these raids,” the officials claimed, adding that surprise inspections are being carried during daytime and in evenings.

The official said due to these surprise raids daytime hooks in many areas have disappeared and some feeders have shown marginal load reduction during the day.

“There is a slight improvement in day voltage in many areas, but night voltage profile has not improved much. The campaign will continue so that power scenario in the Valley improves during winter,” the officer said. (KNS)
