Shopian:  Residents from different hamlets of South Kashmir’s Shopian district Saturday accused R&B and certain district administration officials of embezzling large chunk of funds meant for the construction of bridge at Zawoora that connects huge population with Shopian district.
According to locals the bridge was supposed to construct at a cost of Rs 7 crore but ironically instead of starting work on the bridge, R&B and district administration officials constructed a diversion spending Rs 29 lakh on it. “As the diversion was thrown open for the traffic, it was washed away by rains within a day, leaving people high and dry,” locals told CNS demanding a thorough probe and explanation from the officials involved in the process.
“If it was a 7 crore project then why instead of concrete bridge, diversion was constructed. After the diversion was washed away, the authorities tried to construct bailey bridge which was opposed by the local population,” locals said.
Executive Engineer Me’raj Ahmed told CSN that it is a 7 crore project and so far they have spent Rs 29 lakh on a diversion. “The bridge will be completed in two phases and till then we are mulling to construct two Bailey bridges but the plan did not work out as the machinery and tools are not avaible at the moment,” he said and refuted the allegations that money has been swindled by any official.
