SRINAGAR: Minister for Horticulture, Abdul Rehman Veeri Friday stressed the need for scientific intervention to meet challenges in the horticulture sector of the state and called for proactive measures to increase horticulture production in the State.
The Horticulture Minister was addressing the inaugural function of National Conference on Temperate Fruits and Nuts here today.
He said more than 70 per cent people in the State are either directly or indirectly engaged in horticultural activities, contributing to the States economy in a big way and added that the Government shall do everything possible to safeguard their interests.
Minister said during turbulent times, horticulture kept the economy of the state stable when every other sector suffered hugely.
Veeri called for scientific interventions in horticulture to meet daily challenges and hoped that in the conference the scientists will deliberate upon challenges faced by horticulture in the state and come up with solid recommendations for solutions. He said scientific community has to play a key role to improve the horticulture sector. Government will diversify horticulture by adopting new techniques and best practices to survive the onslaught of emerging markets in and outside the country, he said.
The Horticulture Minister said the Department is planning to depute an officer in every village on the pattern of Village Level Worker of Rural Development Department. In rural areas f you need any help, you have VLWs but there is no such officer for orchardists. We will have one Horticulture Development Officer in every village so that they can help our farmers when needed, he added.
