Srinagar: University of Kashmir, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Khursheed Iqbal Monday called for complete revamping of the whole examination and evaluation system in the higher education sector.
Speaking at the 4th Post-End Semester Examination (ESE) workshop on Examinations and Evaluation Reforms: Reactive Vs Proactive Analysis, at the Central University of Kashmir Prof Khursheed said: The present examination and evaluation system, which we have been following from the past many decades and with which the evaluators, unfortunately, have become totally attached to, is out dated and vague and needs to be done away with immediately.
The current system lacks efficacy and there is a dire need to revolutionise and fully overhaul the entire set up in order to ensure more transparency and test and assess the intelligence of the students, he said.
He said the Grading System was much more effective as it brings five to ten per cent of the top students at par with each other.
KU, Vice-Chancellor said that more than 80 per cent of the graduates, passing out from the higher educational institutions across the State and country as they had no takers in the market, locally and internationally. The Government should also have a relook at the educational policy in order to produce exceptionally good human resource, he said.
Prof. Khursheed also underscored the need for further improving the teaching standards. The faculty should teach beyond the text books and continuously update their knowledge with respect to their stream, he said.
CUK Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Meraj ud Din Mir, while addressing the participants said that unfortunately the personal likes and dislikes in many situations influence the evaluation of the answer scripts. This issue needs to be researched thoroughly as it may affect the career of bright students, Prof. Meraj ud Din said.
He said the EEW of the varsity was continuously holding the workshops on examination and evaluation reforms, in order to discuss and deliberate the issues and difficulties faced by the examinees and evaluators during the course of ESE. The entire examination system in the CUK is transparent and the students can seek re-evaluation if they are not satisfied with their marks, Prof. Mehraj ud Din, said adding the feedback of the students regarding the examination is also taken frequently.
Dean, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kashmir, Prof. Khurshid Ahmed Butt, while speaking on the occasion, complimented the EEW of the CUK for holding the workshop on the important issue. Our examination and evaluation system is plagued with problems and has always been neglected by the academicians, Prof. Khurshid Ahmed Butt.
Registrar, CUK, Prof. M Afzal Zargar while welcoming the guests gave a detailed account about the examination system of CUK. He underscored the need of making a robust examination and evaluation system. Prof. Zargar said the University is holding continuous and comprehensible internal assessments of the students and has shifted to grading system. He said the workshop is a platform to discuss the much needed steps in order to reform the examination and evaluation system and the recommendations of the workshop would be taken into consideration for future.
