Detention of youth sparks protest in Habba Kadal

SRINAGAR: The nocturnal raids and subsequent detention of few youth sparked a protest in Habba Kadal area of old Srinagar City on Saturday.

The protesters while demanding the immediate removal of CRPF bunker in the area alleged that on Friday night the troopers of that bunker went on a rampage and beat people to pulp. “The unbridled CRPF men even didn’t spare a groom and the barati’s. These troopers smashed windowpanes of houses and caused damage to scores of vehicles parked on the road. It has become a routine for these troopers to harass and beat people in the area after every stone-pelting incident,” said a protester.

The protesters said that police raided several houses during late night hours and arrested many youth. They demanded the immediate release of these youth.

Confirming the arrest of few youth from Habba Kadal locality, a police official said that they have been detained on charges of stone-pelting. “These youth frequently resort to stone-pelting and disturb the peace in the area,” he said.
