Srinagar: Normal life was affected in Jammu on Saturday after particular community observed a shutdown against alleged cow slaughter and a beef party organized by an Independent lawmaker Engineer Rashid in Summer Capital.
The call for shutdown was given by National Panthers Party that has a zero representation in State Assembly.
Almost all the shops, educational institutions and other business establishments remained closed in Jammu city while skeletal movement of transport was observed on roads. The banks and government offices however were open and functioned normally. Eyewitnesses told CNS that most of the shops in Muslim majority areas of Jammu city including Gujar Nagar, Ustad Mohalla, Talab Khatika remained open.
Some activists from two political parties including NPP and Congress party tried to stop the private vehicles near Residency Road Jammu, however, police immediately swung into action and dispersed the protesters who were chanting anti-Kashmir slogans. The protesters were demanding the immediate arrest of Engineer Rashid and complete ban on the consumption and slaughter of bovine animals.
The situation in Jammu and under control and heavy contingent of police and Para-military troopers have been deployed to deal with the trouble mongers, said a police official adding that some miscreants tried to block Residency Road, who were dispersed.
Meanwhile amid shutdown Congress workers led by Raman Bhalla staged a protest outside BJP office in Jammu accusing the party of giving free hand to anti-Jammu people in Kashmir and not taking action against those who slaughter bovine animals in the State.
Pertinently, Independent MLA from Langate Engineer Rashid had organized a beef party in Srinagar while Udhampur, Chenani and Reasi towns had observed shutdown on Friday after the carcasses of three bovine animals were found at Chenani, which according to officials had been poisoned.
