SRINAGAR: In what could be a major development, Hurriyat patriarch and chairperson of his amalgam, Syed Ali Geelani shall is attending the session of Organization of Islamic Cooperations (OIC) foreign ministers meeting to be held in New York from September 27 to October 1 this year.
Besides Geelani, chairperson Dukhtaran-e- Millat Asiya Andrabi has also been invited by the OICs Director General of Cabinet, Abdul Aziz Al- Sabeel to represent Kashmir in the coming foreign ministers meeting in New York.
OIC had invited Geelani in the past too for this meeting, but could not attend for not having the passport.
But this time Geelani is having passport, as he was issued one only in July by the authorities. He had applied for the same in May to travel to Dubai to meet his ailing daughter, who had suffered a paralytic attack. And in July the short-duration passport was issued to him, which will be valid for nine months.
This would be first time that Geelani will be attending an OIC meeting in New York.
However, Hurriyat (g) spokesperson, Ayaz Akbar, told KNS that no decision has been taken yet whether Geelani would attend the meet or not. Geelani sahab has been invited to attend the OIC meeting, but no decision has been taken on it so far. The decision on it will be taken in APHC members meeting soon, he said.
Sources said that Geelani, if allowed to travel, would apprise OIC leadership about present situation of Valley, and will urge them to press India to stop human rights violations perpetrated by its forces in Kashmir.
