Septuagenarian Hit by Shell in Nowhatta
SRINAGAR: A 15-year-old boy and a septuagenarian pedestrian sustained injuries due to pellet firing and teargas shelling by police after Friday prayers at Nowhattta here.
Clashes between groups of youth and government forces also left several other persons injured in other parts of the Kashmir Valley.
Official sources said that Adil Bashir Khan (15) son of Bashir Ahmad Khan of Haihama Kupwara, presently putting up at Noorbagh in rented accommodation along with his family, suffered grave injuries due to pellet firing at Nowhatta.
Adil has sustained multiple wounds in his stomach and was rushed to SKIMS in unconscious condition, they said. Also, a 70-year-old Ghulam Ahmad Kakroo of Narwara Eidgah sustained injuries in leg after he was hit by a teargas canister fired by cops at Nowhatta after Friday prayers.
He has suffered minor injuries and his condition was stable, they said.
Eyewitnesses said that scores of people staged anti-India and pro-freedom slogans outside Jama Masjid.
Clashes between police and protests erupted in frontier Kupwara district of north Kashmir. Eyewitnesses said that soon after Friday prayers, dozens of youth pelted stones on a local army bunker for nearly 5 to 8 minutes. They said that the army exercised maximum restraint and did not retaliate. The police rushed to the spot and chased away the protesters, they added. Sources said that two persons including a cop sustained injuries in the clashes at Kupwara.
Clashes between police and protesters also raged at Anantnag Town of south Kashmir in which a journalist sustained injuries. Stone-pelting incidents were also reported from Lal Chowk, Reshi Bazar and Mattan Chowk areas of South Kashmirs Anantnag district.
Eyewitnesses said that hundreds of people held protests in the town after Friday prayers and raised pro-freedom and pro-Islam slogan. They also raised slogans against the rightwing Hindutva groups and clashed with police.
Despite fervent appeal from the leading cleric Molvi Muhammad Akram Dar in Pulwama district, group of youth attacked police station with stones. Reports said that unidentified persons threw a mysterious object at a Territorial Army man, who ran for cover and raised an alert, triggering panic in the area. However, an official said that the object was later found to be a black colour rubber bulb attached to a stethoscope.
