Baghdad: At least ??23?? people were killed and 68 others wounded when three bombs went off in mainly Shi’ite neighborhoods in central Baghdad on Thursday, security and medical sources said.
A suicide blast claimed by Islamic State group killed at least 19 people in the commercial district of Bab al-Sharqi, a demonstration that the shadowy terror group can still launch attacks in the heart of the capital despite government efforts to thwart them.
The second explosion happened after an explosive package went off in the capitals al-Wathba Square, killing at least nine people and wounding 31.
A third explosion in the nearby Bab al-Muadham district killed four people, the sources said. A hospital source said the bombs had wounded a total of 68 people.
Daesh or ISIS later claimed responsibility for both attacks.
The United Nations (UN)s Assistance Mission for Iraq says a total of 1,325 Iraqis were killed and another 1,811 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in August.
According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 585.
Violence also claimed the lives of 740 members of the Iraqi security forces in the same month. A great portion of the fatalities was recorded in Baghdad Province, where 318 civilians were killed.
The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since ISIS militants began their march through the Iraqi territory in June 2014. Army soldiers and volunteer fighters have joined forces and are seeking to take back militant-held regions in joint operations.
