SRINAGAR: The department of Agriculture today organized the Sale of hi-yielding varieties of seedlings of Kashmiri Saag to be transplanted in Kitchen gardens. The distribution of seedlings was kick started by Director Agriculture Kashmir Altaf Aijaz Andrabi.
The sale witnessed tremendous enthusiasm among the people and heavy rush was witnessed on the first day of the sale. People from Srinagar as well as far flung areas of the valley attended the sale.
The Director Agriculture was appraised that Rs. 70,000 worth seedlings have been raised and are ready for distribution among the farmers. Around 10 Kanals of area is under cultivation for raising quality seedlings both in open and protected conditions with an aim to increase production of vegetables and meet the need of farmers to review their economic condition.
Mr. Andrabi while interacting with the people and farmers present on the occasion said that keeping in view the huge economic potential of vegetable seedlings the farmers and unemployed youth should practice seedling production in their fields. The venture can prove very profitable, and the department will provide all technical guidance to such people.
The Director was informed that from April 2015 to August 2015 approximately 8 lakh seedlings have been distributed among farmers, realizing revenue of Rs 3. 25 lakh.
During interaction the Seed Production Officer apprised the Director that Onion seedlings will be ready for distribution by the first week of November.
