Veeri reviews activities of horticulture sector in Jammu

Rs 17 cr plan under implementation under MIDK, RKVY

JAMMU- Minister for Horticulture, Hajj & Auqaf, Abdul Rehman Veeri, reviewed the working of Department of Horticulture Jammu and Horticulture Planning and Marketing here today.

Director Horticulture Jammu Anil Kumar Sharma, Head Division of Fruit & Science SKUAST Dr V.K Wali , Dy. Director Horticulture (Central) Jammu , Dy. Director Horticulture (P&M) Mr. Showkat Ahmad Khan,  Chief Horticulture Officers, District level Officers, Horticulture Development Officers besides other field functionaries at the block level of Jammu Division attended the meeting.

Director Horticulture presented the details of action plan being adopted by the department during current financial year under various centrally sponsored schemes. He said that the department has vigorously taken up farmer friendly Rs 16 crore plan under CSS scheme MIDH along with RKVY which has an approved plan of Rs 1.20 crore. Besides, rainy season plantation is underway by prospective orchardists along with deliverance of other components of the schemes as per guidelines.

The Director informed that an area of 600 Ha has been identified for rainy season plantation and till date pit digging in an area of 350 Ha and plantation in an area of 170 Ha has been completed. Besides informed 896 soil tests from the fields have been tested and 37 of pesticide samples have been lifted from the markets to check sale of spurious drugs.

The Minister interacted with the field officers to know about their observations and requirements for healthy and efficient implementation of the schemes in the field. He exhorted upon all to give boost to production by adoption of High Density plantation, mechanization and judicious use of irrigation facilities including micro-irrigation.

For obtaining high returns of the produce, the Minister advocated adoption of Integrated Nutrient Management / Integrated Pest Management practices followed by registration with Organic Certification Agency which is highly subsidized and prioritized by the Govt. Any organically produced and certified product gets two to three times more returns than normal one.

He advised all be it Research, Production or Marketing to co-ordinate for expeditious transfer of technology from lab to land  so that the quality production and productivity of Jammu Division equates with state and national matrix so that Horticulture comes up as a main stay for people of this region. 

Further, the Minister stressed for identifying the demonstration patches in every district of the province and the officers have to work with utmost dedication, honesty and vigor in order to achieve the objectives set by the government. He added that the officers will also be rewarded for rendering best services in adoption of new technology to boost the Horticulture production.

The Minister emphasized to establish Vermi compost units in large number in every district for which the Govt. will also provide funds. He added that production and application of vermicompost will result in quality production of fruits and getting certified the produce as organic which will be marketed at a very higher rate.
