Police flex muscles on daily rated workers

Srinagar: Police Monday flexed muscles on daily rated workers who took to streets demanding framing of policy for regularization of their services.

At least 39 protesters were reportedly injured including two female protestors as police thrashed protesting workers. Around one hundred of workers were also taken into preventive detention.

Protestors assembled under the banner of Employees Joint Action Committee at Shar-e-Kashmir Park here.

Under the leadership of EJAC President Abdul Qayoom Wani and President J&K Casual Daily Wagers Forum Sajad Ahmad Parray, thousands of assembled protestors raised slogans to press for their demands.

They were also holding placards, reading: ‘frame policy for our regularization’, ‘implement cabinet order.’

After staging protest demonstrations in the park, the protestors tried to march towards Gupkar based Chief Minister’s residence.  However, police contingent deployed didn’t allow them to proceed. “After the minor scuffle between police and agitating daily wagers, police lathi charged the marchers to disperse them,” eyewitnesses said.

Police also used coloured water to disperse the protestors. EJAC leaders including Adul Qayoom Wani, Farooq Ahmad Trali, Manzoor Ahmad Pampori, Farooq Ahmad Khan and President J&K Casual Daily Wagers Forum Sajad Ahmad Parray, Mir Masroor and others were taken into preventive custody.

“I was beaten up to pulp and treated like criminal. If organizing a peaceful protest is illegal then I want to know what is legal in Kashmir,” Vice president Daily Wagers Forum Mir Sarvar said.

Earlier, talking to media persons, Wani said that the authorities should regularize the services of daily wagers without any further delay. He said that more than 56000 families are suffering due to the delay caused by authorities.

“The present dispensation has assured during budget assembly session that high power committee would be set up to frame the policy for regularization of daily wagers. More than five months have passed and no such committee exists on the ground,” said Wani.

He added that EJAC would not leave daily wagers alone and will fight for the genuine demands of the daily wagers.

Expressing resentment over the silence of government, he said that the poor, helpless and starving employees have been repeatedly lathi charged and detained to deny them their genuine rights.

Sajad Ahmad Parray said that they would continue to fight for their right. “We will not allow also to politicize the our genuine demands. Sometines we are assured that our services will be regularized and sometimes we are asked to wait till policy for our regularization is frmed. Authorities are buying time and doing nothing on ground,” he said adding that non-regular employees have spent the precious years of their life in serving the government.

He added that PDP was condemning the use of force against them when the party was not in power. “We have hundreds of press release on record wherein PDP was condemning use of power against daily wagers who were demanding regularization of services. Even, PDP was strongly urging the then NC-Congress government to regularize the service of daily wagers. Now, as the party is in power, it has doing what it was condemning as an opposition party earlier,” said Parray. (CNS)
