Of Teachers, Education & Screening Hullabaloo

There is no doubt about the fact that the teacher’s role is pivotal in the development of the society. It is the teacher only who develops students into intellectuals who later on with their potential and capabilities shape the future of the nation. The progress of any country depends on its educational system: the more sound it is the better will be the prospects for its growth. It is only through his resourceful, able and proficient nature that he is able to mould a child’s perception towards education with proper moral and ethical values that are its embedded blessings.

The teacher as rightly called to be the builder of a nation with his unique power of conviction, confidence and passion makes students to realize their dreams. The efficient teacher with his qualities of patience, professionalism and creativity competently carries out his duty of building educationally blessed individuals in contrast to other teachers who merely carry out this responsibility to earn their perks without rendering contribution to the development of the society. Those teachers not only earn a bad name to this profession but are like termites who are responsible for rotting the system. Not only that, they also serve as a base for raising fingers on other efficient teachers who undeservingly have to bear the brunt of the authorities for no fault of theirs.

Unfortunately, in the past few days some ugly events have taken place that have shocked us all. It is disturbing to learn that a ReT applicant couldn’t pen down few lines on a common topic and also failed to solve a primary class algebraic problem, thus giving rise to questions about the mode of selection that has been adopted while selecting such incompetent teachers. It is quite astonishing to learn such things. It is not that all ReT teachers belong to the same category. Reviving the ailing elementary level education in J&K needed courage and inspiration to what most of the ReT teachers have stood for. There should be no doubt in their credibility & excellence. But the deadwood needs to be filtered out for the common good of all.

Pertinently the government has come up with reform measures like holding of a screening test which would clearly sort out the able and potent teachers from the rot. Screening tests would not only ensure quality education under competent teachers but will also acknowledge their dignity that has come under scanner. It is high time for them to raise their heads high and prove their mettle and caliber and wash off the perception that teaching fraternity is incompetent. Holding protests would no longer solve problems. Agitations are in turn questioning the teacher’s integrity and sincerity. Instead if all whole heatedly accept the government’s decision to appear in the screening test and earn a good name for them, things will start getting systematic and a visible change will occur in the educational field.
