‘Drunk’ VDC member detained, disarmed over firing shots

Srinagar: A Village Defence Committee (VDC) member was detained and disarmed by police after he fired several shots in aerial last night spreading panic and fear in Mendhar area of Poonch district.

A senior police officer told Srinagar-based news agency GNS that the VDC member namely Vinod Sawhiney of Gohlad Mendhar last night fired several shots from his rifle at his home. The officer said that the Vinod was drunk.

He said that the firing created panic and fear among local residents after which a police party rushed to the spot and immediately seized his rifle. The said VDC man was also detained by police, he added.

We have taken cognizance of the incident and investigations have been taken up, the official said. (GNS)
