Searches, patrolling stepped up in Shopian

Srinagar:Following the release of Hizbul Mujahideen video on social media and rising militant attacks, the government forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district have stepped up search operations and patrolling.

Locals said the forces including police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) and army are regularly conducting frisking of civilians and vehicles. “The forces stop vehicles and ask passengers to come down for frisking. The searches have been intensified since last three days,” residents said.

Sources said that the forces are also conducting nocturnal patrolling across the district after reports of heightened militant movement. The forces, sources said, are on look out for a Hizbul Mujahideen commander, Waseem Malla. He, according to security officials, is behind various attacks in the district on police, army and village heads. (GNS)
