BIRMINGHAM: A pro-Palestinian demonstration in the UK has shut down a factory near Birmingham, which makes drones for Israel, reports say.
Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists along with other protesters rallied around the UAV Engines plant at Shenstone, near Lichfield, north of Birmingham on Monday and reportedly occupied the road of the Elbit factory there. The demonstrators demanded the plants shutdown.
Meanwhile, local media said the campaigners draped a banner saying, This factory is closed on the sites gates.
The same factory was occupied in a two-day protest last August.
It was targeted again to mark the first anniversary of what the Block the Factory organization called Israels attack on Gaza, the Birmingham Mail reported.
Now Richard Donnelly, an anti-war activist in London, told reporters that the British arms industry is a multi-billion dollar industry reaping the profits from such sales overseas.
Donnelly also noted that the British governments continued support for Israel obviously contradicts its stated position of a two-state solution in the Middle East.
According to the London Palestine Action group (LPA), the UAV plant in Shenstone was a wholly-owned subsidiary of Israels biggest arms company, Elbit Systems.
Police closed access to the factory Monday morning after several protesters scaled the roof of the plant.
