A Successful Model of Human Development

Glorious Dividends of Imam Khomeini led Islamic Revolution of Iran.

THE destiny of a nation today with multiple progression & national pride was scripted by Imam Khomeini ( r a ) through a 65 year ordeal of torture, pain, imprisonments, exiles. And the success story of the Imam lead Iranian Islamic revolution of the 18th largest country of the world is distinguished & ever impacting. A revolution that was glorified out of a long drawn serial of struggle, affecting miserably millions of people over decades from the onset of 20th century till February 1979. Next 10 years was a struggle to protect freedom from bullying of the west and saving the nation from disintegration threatened by an imposed war (Iraq-Iran).

The long chain of events preceding the success of the Islamic revolution with the historic moment of the landing of the flight in Tehran carrying Imam  on the soil of Motherland on 1st February 1979  bore testimony to immense sufferings.  A revolution lays its origin to a 12 year old lively, strong and good at sports dutiful student. With an intellect pursuit from the young age, Imam had been witness to sufferings of the people from the beginning of First World War in 1914. Dreaded khans and the rebels under government protection were raiding houses, pilfering the people and trespassing on the chastity of the women.

A young boy took to resistance born out of oppressive impressions of the war.  A revolution  originated from the holocaust of injustice and oppression.5th June 1963 is the origin of all inclusive uprising, characterised by two outstanding features I.e the sole  leadership of Imam Khomeini and the all Islamic motives and objectives of the movement. Thus it marked a new chapter in the struggle of the Iranian nation, known as Islamic Revolution worldwide.

14 year exile:

Imam was deported to Turkey on the grounds of perceived threat to the Raza Shah Pahalwi regime in 1964. After 11 months, started another long exile of 13  years to another country this time IRAQ on 12th October 1965. Imam’s. Son Ayatollah haji Aqa Mustafa Khomeini was martyred in 1977. Imam termed it ” a divine blessing in disguise “. Yet another exile on 5th October 1978, another country-this time France.

After 14 years in exile directing the revolution from foreign soils confronting enormous difficulties & mental torture, Imam arrived in Tehran on 1st February 1979 to an unprecedented welcome of 6 million Iranians including defence personnel. First Phase of the revolution thus marked a new beginning.

3 Guiding principles

The success of the revolution marked the action programme of the implementation process of the guiding principles of the RAHBER. Three principles as I perceive were set for building the destiny of the nation & it’s subjects.

First                Knowledge empowerment

Second,          Individual competence, human progression both physical & personality    related, skill development, women protection & empowerment, health care & improving living standards of the people.

Third,               Research & development

And the birth of a free nation on a philosophy compliant to Islamic principles started on a determination with a pledge to protect freedom & dignity & to build core human characteristics—self belief, self confidence & self empowerment. The objectives of revolution could not be derailed with the end of diplomatic & economic ties by USA, banning Iranian oil imports & freezing approximately about 11 billion $ ( about Rs 70000/- crores) on today’s forex rate of Rs 63.  And Iran Iraq war besides attempts by Unitted states of America to break Iranians did not succeed in dampening their  spirits.

And with over 9 million mourners in procession on 4th June 1989 imam’s last journey to heavenly abode marked the new beginning.  Imam Khomeini ( r a) passed on the trust & custodianship of the objects of the revolution to Imam Khameini present Leader. The revolution was now on a new acid test of Iranians determination and nation’s integrity.

Turbulences, challenges a new dimension:

With lot many road block agendas & last being United Nations mandated international sanctions in 2005 at the behest of super powers  but nothing worked against the Iranians.  History has proved that Imam lead Revolution was not about acquiring power for a position of superman  but for scaling heights in research &  development & for betterment of lives of the people.

A guiding symbol of ‘ reign high on self esteem’ & resilience even in most adverse & hostile conditions the philosophy of the revolution is a motivation to achieve individual competences & collective achievements, progressive mindsets & successes while upholding Islamic principles & guidance.

The success of the revolution inculcated a spirit of sacrifice for upholding human dignity, individual identity, nation’s sovereignty. The revolution based on cherished principles of ” Live & Let Live ‘ is for promoting mutual understanding & principled international cooperation for helping humanity across the world.

The Islamic revolution has brought about a total transformation in the Iranian economy & human progression. Some facts:

1, Iran today is the 2nd largest economy in Middle East & North Africa after only Saudi Arabia, with 4th position in crude oil reserves & 2nd in natural gas reserves in the world. However June 2015 reports have suggested Iran having scaled to 1st position ahead of Russia.

2, As per data published by  International Monetary Fund, Iran has achieved a Gross Domestic Product called GDP ( aggregate of value of national production of Agriculture, industry, services & all economic sectors )  of $ 1334 billion ( one billion is equal to Rs 6300 cr in Indian rupees ) at 3% rise in 2014. The national production stood at mere 73 bn $ in 1978. Iran’s potential is yet to transform into actual wealth creation status due to international sanctions.

All services including govt & private sector, banking, insurance, telecommunication services put together contribute 50% to the national production. Oil production at 23% & manufacturing/ mining at 20% with Agriculture contributing 10% of gross national production.

3, National Production per capita at mere 2930.6 $ in 2005 has risen to 7217.4,$ in 2012, 16165 $ in 2013 & 17114 $ in 2014  ( 1 dollar is equal to Indian Rs 63/-presently). This marks almost a super position in Middle East & second only to Saudi Arabia. India has GDP per capita of $ 6265 in 2014.

4, Gross national income per capita in 2012 at 10695  $  from 7226 $ in 2005 recording a jump of 48%, against South Asia average of 3343 $ and a global high at 11501 in that year.

You may well judge the prosperity index of Iranians despite serious bruises to the economy of the country.

5, Iran’s share in world population of 725 crores in 2014 is 1.08%. However the share in the global GDP stands at 1.02 %. A comparison ratio far ahead than other South Asian countries India, Pakistan & Bangladesh besides China.

6, Tourist arrivals of 1889000 in 2005 up to 3834000 in 2012 & estimated to be now closer to 50 lacs. Despite onset of international sanctions, the ever increasing inflow of tourists & pilgrims made up the substantial part of foreign currency inflow. Unesco has rated Iran among the 10 most tourism countries in the world.

7, Quality of lives of Iranians have undergone a positive change. Iranian Govt has stood with the people in turbulent times on every front. The sector wise factual position will give you an insight about a model of good governance and farsighted leadership, a combinations of politicians & religious leaders.

8,  Education:

Government spending in education in 2006-12 period was 3% of GDP. It resulted in primary & secondary gross enrolment ratio of 92 females & 96 males per 100 in this time band. Last 2 years it must have surely narrowed the small gap leading close to 100% achievement.   Access to Knowledge I e   Expected year of Schooling  On 1980 base of 8.7 years has now gone up to 14.4 years in 2012.  62.1% women have reached secondary or higher level of education, with Male adult achievement at 69.1%.

9, subsidy:

price controls & subsidies on food & energy no doubt burdens the economy but against international onslaught on Iranians, State stood with people in the moment of upholding substantial resilience.   A whopping subsidy at 27% of GDP was extended to Iranians by the government for sharing the part of the costs of petroleum products, electricity, water & bread. ( Rs 38,44000 crores in 2007-08) & assuming it at close to that level may be much higher now.

It may now under go changes with opening of the economy with expected lifting of the imposed sanctions on success of undergoing negotiations in Geneva. Huge investments in Iranian economy are waiting in pipeline consequently. –To be concluded
