Srinagar: Protests erupted in south Kashmirs Pulwama Town against the thrashing of a shopkeeper allegedly by an army officer driver. Police said they have a registered a case against army.
The shopkeeper identified as Sajad Ahmad Najar was thrashed by a Major of armys 53 Rashtriya Rifles at Rahmoo after the Sajad and a civilian driver of army identified as Sajad Ahmad entered into a heated argument followed by scuffle over a sim card, witnesses said.
The army Major as who was standing near his shop was thrashed by him ruthlessly, they said, adding that the army officer was part of a patrolling party.
Following the incident, the locals took shopkeeper to Pulwama District Hospital for treatment. The locals staged a protest outside the hospital and also near the Deputy Commissioners office in the Town. They blocked the road and were demanding action against the accused army officer as well as driver.
The protesters handed over an application to police wherein they demanded registration of an FIR against army.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Qazi Shamas said a case under FIR number 36 under sections 452, 427 RPC has been registered against army. The protesters have hailed timely police action against the army.
The accused army officer, meanwhile, said that the shopkeeper tried to snatch his rifle. The service rifle holds very much importance for us. He tried to snatch it from me and that is why I acted against him, he said. GNS
