Traffic Police Asks People To Cooperate or Face Music

Shoppers and traders asked to use parking lotsSrinagar: Newly appointed SP Traffic city Thursday candidly admitted that traffic system is a total mess in Srinagar city. He appealed people, especially commuters, transporters and traders to cooperate with the department and strictly maintain traffic discipline.

Addressing a press conference SP Maqsood-ul-Zaman held various factors responsible for traffic congestion in the city. “Rambagh-Jahangir Chowk Flyover is under construction and no traffic has been plying on that route. Flood victims have blocked roads at various places by laying construction material there.

Traders and shoppers are not making use of parking lots and moreover vendors have illegally occupied footpaths and roadsides at different places. We are trying our best to manage the traffic and hopefully with the cooperation of the people we will manage it smoothly,” he said.

“We are all civilized people and we must cooperate with the traffic department.  If people understand and stop violating traffic rules, then we will surely come over the traffic mess in Srinagar city,” he said.

Maqsood-ul-Zaman  said three parking lots located at Press Enclave, Sheikh Bagh and Sangarmal complex will be renovated and build on modern lines. Government is serious about it and the Chief Minister has already directed all the concerned agencies to coordinate with one another.

“We had requested traders and shoppers not to park their vehicles outside their shops. Similarly we had directed transporters not to make unnecessary stops in the middle of the roads as that hampers traffic movement.  Our duty was to convey message to them and now if they will not oblige, we will come down heavily on them. The traffic department has initiated tangible measures to streamline the traffic management and road safety in Srinagar city. We will act tough against the bikers who do not use crash helmets and also the stunt bikers will be taken to task,” he said adding that the department has already informed the school authorities to comply with the government directions and refrain from overloading.

“It is shocking and irony that school children are being ferried in cabs like cattle. If they will not stop this practice, they will face the music,” he said.

SP Traffic city appealed people to follow traffic rules and give a proof of being law abiding citizens. “There is no need for us to go harsh on commuters if they sincerely follow traffic rules. We have given diversions to ease traffic congestion. We admit that commuters have been facing hardships but diversions are there for the smooth regulation of traffic. I humbly request all to maintain traffic discipline,” he said but at the same time warned that traffic department will come down heavily on the violators.

Responding to a question, Maqsood-ul-Zaman said that if vendors will start occupying foothpaths again, they will be taken to task. “Tangible measures have been taken for better traffic management and regulation. In view of the growing population and ever increasing flow of vehicular traffic, our responsibilities have doubled. People should understand and cooperate with us.
