Srinagar: Accusing government for its failure to tackle foul smell emanating from the Achan dumping site, the locals Thursday demanded immediate closure of the landfill site.
The residents living around the dumping site complained multiple health problems due to the foul smell.
We have lost our faith in the successive governments for the reason that our concerns vis-à-vis Achan dumping site have been ignored time and again, CNS quoted Abdul Majid Tanzo, who led a delegation from Aanchar Soura as having said.
The residents alleged that the government was buying time in identifying alternate garbage sites.
We are already suffering from diverse health problems but it seems that the government is least bothered to address this long pending demand of the people. There is an unbearable stench coming out of the dumping site which is totally unbearable and hazardous, the delegation said.
They said the stench was the result of lack of proper management of more than 350 metric tons of daily solid waste collected by the SMC which is dumped in Achan grounds.
The situation will worsen mainly in summer season when the temperature would start to soar in with complaints of horrid stench pouring in from as far as Lal Bazaar, Nigeen, Nowshera, Hawal, Zadibal, Nowhatta, Gojwara, Kawdara and other areas, they said.
The residents threatened to intensify their stand against the government in case counteractive steps were not taken immediately.
As per the High Court directives, the state government has been asked to install Treatment Plant with Modular Operational Capacity and two additional Leachate Treatment Plants at Achan.
