Army Launches Op Shiva to Protect Amarnath Yatris


SRINAGAR: To provide secure environment to Amarnath Yatra yatris, the Army has launched Operation Shiva to foil any attempt by miscreants to cause disturbance during the pilgrimage starting from July 2.

Security forces will also provide medical as well as communication assistance during the yatra.

However, there is no specific input about any militant plan to target yatris during the 59-day-long pilgrimage, General Officer Commanding 15 Corps Lt General Subrata Saha told reporters on thesidelines of a function here today.

Meanwhile, he said the Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI), appeared to be a “fringe” element, was responsible for the recent attack on cellularestablishments in the valley.

He said the force has launched Operation Shiva to provide environmental security to yatris, who will undertake the pilgrimage this year, Lt Col Shah said there was no specific input about the possible threat to the yatra.

However, security agencies are getting generic inputs on the movement of militants, he said adding the army would provide environmental security to secure all the approaches to the routes of the yatra, including the traditional Nunwan Pahalgam Chandanwari and the shortest Baltal tracks.

On the security arrangements, the security forces will also conduct aerial surveillance to keep a close watch on both the tracks.
