Reading is Fun

Reading is a healthy exercise for brain, but not when you barely have a modicum of interest in the subject. I have been a voracious reader since childhood and continue to be so. People are taken by surprise when they come to know that it takes me hardly two days to complete a novel of 200 pages. But, for me it is more fun to read a book than to waste time in social networking. I belong to an educative background, so reading is in my veins. I often get a nice hearing from my mother for keeping my eyes glued to a book for hours together, and I cannot help it either, which often leaves her disappointed.

I often fail to understand why the young generation of today shy away from reading books when it increases the mental acumen of an individual. Reading can be fun at times, if not all the time. It increases the vocabulary of an individual and makes him well-versed. But alas! Who among our GEN-X would like to shift their focus from twitter to Shakespeare, facebook to Wordsworth and orkut to Othello. What a tragedy! Our great minds are wasting their time in updating their statuses rather than upgrading themselves. Few days back I was given a assignment by the Dean of our college to work as an editor for the college magazine, it was a matter of prestige and honor for me, but most of my work got delayed due to the busy schedule of some students from whom I needed to collect the data, obviously I blame social networking for my delayed work. I do not have an option either. I am not against social networking, nor do I want to spew venom against facebook, but the growing addiction to these sites usually pesters me.

When the students ought to discuss about their mid-semester exams, I find them discussing about the trash pages they have created with all teen age stuff in it. It gives pain to my ears to hear all this crap and trash. Why are they spoiling their time instead why do not they do something constructive and productive.

I do not want to sound like a granny, but I am just concerned about the way the things would turn out to be in the coming years. Certainly I am waiting for some Godot to come to the rescue of these tweens and teens. I am also proud about the knowledge that the young generation possess, sometimes they can put even Google to shame, I often tell my friends that neo nats today already have a Microsoft chip installed within them. So the moot point is that they should channelize their talent in a proper manner. I just hope to see that more Einsteins and Newtons take birth instead of Virrapan.
