SRINAGAR: Two army men were injured after a fierce gun battle broke out between militants and the joint team of army and police at Heff Shirmal in south Kashmirs Shopian district Tuesday evening.
Official sources said that acting on specific information about the presence of some militants at Lonepora village in Heff Shirmal area of the district, armys 55 RR and Special Operations Group of J&K Police cordoned off the area and launched searches.
As the joint team of forces intensified the searches and fired few warning shots near the suspected spot, the militants hiding in the area tried to break the cordon.
However, the militants were later engaged in a gun battle which is going on in the area, officials said late Tuesday evening.
Two army men were injured in the incident and were immediately evacuated to the hospital for treatment, they said.
When reports last came in, the exchange of fire was going on. (GNS)
