NEW DELHI: Srinagar-bound passengers had a harrowing experience on Monday when all private airlines abruptly cancelled their flights at Indira Gandhi Internatioanl Airport citing bad weather in Kashmir as the reason.
The IndiGo, Go Air and SpiceJet announced the cancellation after the security check, said an irate passenger on phone.
Angry passengers blamed airlines for failing to apprise them of the cancellation of the flight and leaving them in lurch.
“They cancelled the flights, after keeping passengers waiting for hours, while it had been snowing since late last night in the Valley”, said Dr Riyaz Ahmad, adding “They could have texted the information of delay or cancellation to passengers saving their precious time.”
The worst thing is that none of the airline agreed to accomodate the passengers of the cancelled flights of Monday in next the days flights.
“They told us to cancell the tickets and buy new ones. I had booked my New Delhi-Srinagar ticket in IndiGo a month back on chaeper fare and it costs me Rs 20,000 for new ticket” for tomorrow, said visibly angry Dr Riyaz who is traveling home from Dubai.
He accused the airline of cheating passengers and cancelling flights on flimsy grounds in order to extarct more money.
“Visibility at Srinagar Airport was good but small amounts of snow had accumulated on tarmac, but that is no reason for flight cancellation”, an official at the Srinagar Airport said.
Reports said several airlines including Air India and Jet Airways announced they will be operating additional flights to ferry stranded passengers on Tuesday.
