NEW DELHI: In a never-before event, Indias ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to get over 100 corporate honchos to formally join the party on Sunday, 1 Feb. This is the first such en masse recruitment of private executives into a political outfit in India, which the party hopes will provide a further fillip to its image of being pro-business.
Times of India reports that according to a BJP statement, those who signed up to join the party include Perveiz Alamgir Khan of Lufthansa, Henry Moses, country head of Qatar Airways, Neeta Agarwal of AT&T, Jagpreet Lamba of AIKON Group, Kapil Kumaria of Corporate Alliance group, Anil Parashar of Interglobe Technologies besides Dr Naveen Talwar, senior orthopaedic surgeon, Fortis Hospital; Rajeev Tyagi, senior advocate and Rajiv Bhambri, CEO, India Abroad newspaper, USA/Canada.
Many top executives of companies like Bank of America, Honeywell, SpiceJet, Bombardier, UTC, KPMG were present on the occasion, according to the BJP.
The new recruits were welcomed aboard by BJP President Amit Shah and Anurag Thakur, president, Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha, who was reportedly instrumental in realising this major haul for the party.
Shah said the corporate leaders who joined on Sunday weren’t joining the party but a family. He expressed confidence that Goods and Service Tax (GST) would be a reality from April 2016. It is proposed that GST will replace all indirect taxes levied on goods and services by the Central and State governments in India. It is aimed at being comprehensive for most goods and services.
Elaborating on the steps taken by the BJP government like Make in India, land acquisition ordinance and mines ordinance to change the business climate and restore business confidence, Shah said the perception about the country was changing fast across the globe and India would be riding the high growth path in the next couple of years.
Shah reportedly made an appeal to corporate groups to take benefit of the newly launched government schemes and to create employment opportunities in the country.
Thakur said it was indeed a matter of great pleasure that professionals, administrators, CEOs and entrepreneurs’ (PACE) had joined the BJP and the party’s activities would certainly gain pace by their entry.
Thakur expressed the hope that since the top bosses have joined, other employees working in these organisations would also be motivated to join the BJP.
