Srinagar: President Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Dr Nisar ul Hassan Friday said it is shocking that a hemophiliac patient died in SKIMS because of non availability of clotting factor VIII.
In a statement he said, Non availability of life saving medicine for hemophiliacs that has resulted in deaths and risks others is a grave and criminal act of omission. Despite High Court directions to keep hemophiliac medicines available round the clock authorities are indifferent and this is a breach of legal obligation.
A clinical trial in 2007 published in NEGM clearly recommends prophylactic over on demand treatment of hemophiliacs to prevent catastrophic bleeding in them. Hemophiliacs in rest parts of the world live a normal quality life but in Kashmir they are dying due to lack of medicine. Hemophiliacs have inalienable Right to have access to treatment that saves them from disabilities and ensures their survival and failure of state to do so is criminal, he said.
Among 230 diagnosed hemophiliac patients in valley many have ended up with permanent disabilities and some have even lost lives due to lack of essential drug. Depriving hemophiliacs of life saving drug is wanton disregard to human life and DAK demands fixing of criminal liability on those responsible for this gross negligence, Dr Hassan added.
