SRINAGAR: Despite tensions on International Border and Line of Control, the Indian and Pakistani forces Monday exchanged sweets to celebrate Indias Republic Day.
Both the armies informed each other about sweets exchange ceremony over hotline and at around 11 am in the morning in Uri sector, reports said.
The two armies, who often accuse each other of violating ceasefire, exchanged sweets and greetings at Aman Setu bridge which connects divided Kashmir in Uri.
An officer of Indian army, who represented India during the ceremony, said: We exchange sweets on all festival days. We do it on our Independence Day as well as on the Independence Day of Pakistan. They present sweets to us on Diwali and we do same on Eid.
I feel honoured and privileged to represent my country in this Confidence Building Measure (CBM), the officer said, adding: both the armies have set pattern of exchanging sweets.
The officer of Indian army expressed hope that long-lasting peace between two arch-rivals would prevail in near future.
Meanwhile, a defence spokesperson said that such friendly gestures are part of the customary traditions at the LoC to express the respect for each others democracy and sovereignty.
